School Life Then 3



THE SCHOOL’S SPORTS DAY, COMPETITIONS & PICNICS

Oh the school Sports Day when we use to look forward to this day – no studies, only fun.

-          When you were recommended for Shankar’s On the spot drawing competition and you would paint the usual painting you knew – mountains, sun, a cottage with smoke coming out, a river flowing from the mountains, few birds and a couple of trees. You were considered exceptional if you could paint something different.

-          When school picnic meant standard visits to Rajghat, Shantivan, Red Fort, Birla mandir, Dolls museum and Qutub minar….where I would try to make a wish at the wishing minar (the legend was that if one can place his back with the pole and take back both arms around it towards back, clasp your hand and make a wish, it will come true….remember when our wishes were very small like a new toy.

-          When you visited the Coca Cola Factory from your school and brought back that typical ‘Red round serving coca cola tray’, it use to be in every house in our block

School life was awesome then:
-          When the school was in tents till the building was ready….

-          Did you ever study in lantern? Or a ‘Mom batti’....

-          When the monsoon would arrive on 2nd or 3rd July, the first day of school opening and a holiday would be declared due to water flooding in the tents due to heavy downpour. And we would walk back from the school making paper boats and having fun on the way.

-          When bund and chole for 5 paise were the favorites at school canteen inspite of the tiffin with parantha and omelette, sometimes sandwitches, on few other occasions ‘aloo ka parantha’ with ‘Aam ka achar’ which my mother gave every day. Noodles were not even known.

-          This lunch box served me very well for a number of years in my school days…
