Life Back Then Was Awesome -
-          When during war days your family had pasted thick black sheets on glass windows for that perpetual ‘blackout’ sirens in the night to avoid lights shining out and you enjoyed playing in the Z-trenches (meant for air raid shelters) dug near your home during the day and rushing out to them in the night when the 'blackout' sirens went off;  
      Black out rules for vehicles were- white painting strips on mudguards, bumpers, running boards was done for night driving in the city during BLACKOUT. It included painting the headlights with black paint, with little portion left open.

 -          When death of a National leader was dreaded because there would be no music or TV programs due to 3 day national mourning and you had tough time bearing bhajans & shastriya sangeet. You felt as if life and happiness has come to a halt.

-          When bathing in winter with hot water from a 'Hamam'  where water boiled continuously over a wood fire was fun. Heating immersion rods and geysers were unknown.

-          When you could ride your dad's bicycle in 'Kainchi' mode since you couldn't reach till the seat anyways and 'Kainchi' riding also fell in expert category.

-          When every home had 'Peetal ke Bartan' which were taken for metal coating (Kalai) every month.

-          When we made a telephone with 2 ice cream cups and a string that actually worked.

-          If you had enjoyed reading books you got issued from a mobile van of Delhi Public Library (it is still functional) on the tickets issued to you.

-          If you had ever studied in a kerosene 'Lantern' light truly justifying the popular quote- 'burning the midnight oil'.

-          If you had ever studied in a school where classes were held in tents and enjoyed them thoroughly.

-          If you had enjoyed eating dinner in kitchen as your mother prepared food on a coal and wood fired 'Angethi' (gas stoves were unknown).

-          Later many households migrated to 'Nutan' wick stove that worked on kerosene.

-          When a popular time filler on TV was 'Miley Sur Mera Tumhara, Toh Sur Bane Hamara' by Bhimsen Joshi on Doordarshan.
