Life was simple and fun back then and used to be in 'Annas' unlike today where onions are 80/- a kg.....you must be wondering what 'Annas' looked like then. Here see a 1 anna coin.

-    When top quality desi eggs used to cost 12 Annas a dozen(approx 72 paise) and the egg seller used to come to our home, an old stubborn but very sweet sardar jee with white beard, dressed in white pathani suit( I used to wait for him) and you couldn’t haggle with him.

-          When Cadburys chocolate was just 5 Annas (approx 31 paise)

-          When Coca Cola used to cost 4 Annas (25 paise approx)

-          Vegetarians excuse please but for 24 Annas (1.50/- approx) you could buy a Kilo of quality goat meat with 'gurde', 'kapure' and 'kaleji' complimentary with it (Chicken was not popular). 

            All you had to do is ask the old man to dip his big hand (he was a stout white haired muslim bhai – Mulla jee) in the bucket of water and fish out those (terribly expensive now) meat accessories.

 -          When top quality wheat could be purchased for 16/- ‘mun’ (40kg) and per kg cost was a mere 6.5 Annas

 -   When pure, means really Pure Desi Ghee would cost you some annas ‘ser’ (ser - a little more than a kilogram)

-          When you got a haircut for a mere 4 annas (25 paise) and the master jee used to sharpen his razor on a leather strop.

-     When you could eat a tandoori roti sitting down in a tandoor dhaba for just 2 paise and pay 10 pasie for 5 rotis eaten and Daal with onions and green chilly was free with it

-          When you bought ‘Mangalvaar ka Boondi ka parshad’ for just 5 annas (31 paise)

-          When milk vendor used to visit your doorstep with his buffalo and you bought daily fresh unadulterated milk from him for just 2/- a litre.

-          The barat in the marriages always had a sit down dinner unlike today. When 5/- or 11/- were enough during ‘mundans’ and ‘marriage’ ceremonies, going max upto 21/-, 31/- or 51/- depending upon the relationship.
